14. Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi
This extraordinary mosque is one of the highlights of any visit to the Emirates. Completed in 2007, it is an outstanding architectural wonder and the sixth largest mosque in the world. It has a capacity for 40,000 worshippers and features 82 domes, over 1,000 marble columns, gilded chandeliers, and the world’s largest carpet. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers weighing over ten tons. Materials from around the world were sought to make this a truly unique international mosque. Reflective pools surround the mosque, amplifying its beauty. Inlaid stones create a massive garden effect and striking white marble and gilded details gleam in the sun. The mosque is transformed at night by a unique lightning system which reflects the phases of the moon. Christine’s illustrated lecture includes her own photography. |
